Teacher Materials:
-"I Will Save the Earth" by Nuria Roca
-Jack Johnson's "The Three R's- Reduce, Reuse, Recycle" youtube video and a way to play it infront of the class
-Jack Johnson's "The Three R's- Reduce, Reuse, Recycle" lyric sheet (provided below)
-Paper bags
-Cut out pictures of objects that can be reduced, reused, and recycled
Procedures for Learning Activity:
Introduction:
- First, the teacher will conduct a pre-assessment by leading a whole group KWL (What I Know, Want I want to Know, What I Learned) with the students so that they know exactly where the students stand in terms of understanding the three R’s and global responsibility. A KWL will also give the teacher an idea about what the students hope to learn during the unit.
-The teacher will read aloud "I Will Save the Earth," by Nuria Roca. During the read aloud students will have the opportunity to meet Max the Little Monster. He is a cute, furry, green monster who is an environmental nightmare. Among other things, he leaves on all the lights, keeps his computer plugged in, blasts the TV, hoards all of his old toys and uses so much toilet paper it clogs the toilet until finally, his excessive ways cause a power outage. With no TV to watch, computer to play on, video games to play with, Max finds there is a whole big world outside that he can make a difference in the environment
-After the read aloud the teacher will hold a class discussion about how the students felt about Max's actions and if his actions mirror any of their own.
-The teacher will aslo ask the students if they have any ideas about what max might have been able to do differently?
Instruction:
-I will hand out a worksheet with the lyrics of Jack Johnson's song "The Three R's"-The class will then watch the following youtube video: The Three R's: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle (inserted below).
-As students are watching the video they can look at they lyrics and follow along.
-The class will watch the video a second time, this time paying close attention to what it means to reduce, reuse, and recycle. The teacher will pause the video after each section and ask the students to record what they think it means to reduce, reuse, and recycle.
-Once the class has finished watching the video the teacher will write the words "Reduce," "Reuse," and "Recycle" across the board. Then they will ask the students what they think it means to do each act and write their answer under the appropriate section.
-Once all the students have shared their ideas, the class will work together to come up with a working definition for reduce, reuse, and recycle and give examples of each.
Assessment:
-Students will demonstrate that they understand what the three R’s mean by sorting objects into the three different categories and explaining how they can be reused, reduced, or recycled.
-Each student will be given 3 paper bags: one labeled reduce, one labeled reuse, and one labeled recycle. Students will also receive cut outs of different objects that can be reduced, reused, and recycled.
-Students will then sort the cut outs into the appropriate paper bag.
-The teacher will check each students set of bags.
-If there were any common misconceptions then the teacher will address those in a whole class discussion.
