What does it mean to recycle? What sort of things do you recycle at home? I asked these two questions to the students in the Kindergarten class I am observing, wondering what their initial thoughts on recycling and its connection to global responsibility were. I was surprised to find that even though we live during a time that is so focused on reducing, reusing, and recycling, the students I talked to had little to no idea about what it means to recycle. For example, when I asked the students, "Do you have a special place at home dedicated to recycling?" The student's response was "in the trash can." This conversation, in combination with my conversations with other students are what inspired me to center my unit around the theme of the three R’s; Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle.
